An effort is underway to convince local leaders to replace a South Carolina Confederate statue with a monument honoring late actor Chadwick Boseman.

Two petitions being circulated in Anderson, Boseman’s hometown, call for city officials to remove the confederate tribute and erect a statue of the “Black Panther” star in its place. As of late Thursday afternoon, more than 63,000 people had signed one petition, while 54,000 had signed the other. “Mr. Boseman is without question an American treasure and his accolades go on and on,” says Anderson University Student DeAndre Weaver, who started the first petition. “It is only fitting that his work is honored in the same place that birthed him.”

Boseman, 43, died last week following a four-year battle with colon cancer.
